Ground-up Flat Fender Build

So... we are working on a flatty. Well we have wagoneer axles and a Chevy drivetrain, but there will be some flatty. In all reality I'm just building a 4x4 that will look like a jeep. Not much jeep, but still a fun build. Hopefully I can retain the nostalgia of the icon while still having a modern and reliable 4x4. Enjoy!

Nice and low profile. Shouldn't affect the air flow the radiator at all.

Top plate will be added at some point.

Steering

Tight fit with the suspension and steering box. I get to trim the frame and build the bumper now though. I can't wait to work on the winch mounting.

Stock steering geometry should keep the handling neutral.

I need to figure out a way to replace the chevy labeled horn button.

Andrew ran some of my parts through the hot water parts washer at his shop. They are much cleaner now.

I did have to take these apart to make sure the bearings dried out though. No problem, I have to install a sye in one of them anyways.

Days of Sheet Metal

Today I...
finished the fuel filler,

added some width to the salvaged wagoneer inner fenders,

and welded in some corners for the tailgate opening.

Here is a side shot at approx. 1.5-2" lower than ride height. Finalized wheelbase is at 99.5".

These are the lower body mount/rocker protection. The frame rails and rockers are only 1/8" thick so this 1/8" flat bar turned angle iron adds protection and strength.

This shot shows the the flat belly and recessed spring perches.

A friend worked on this filler flange for me and today I was able to finish it up.

I finalized the rear axle location and burned in the "frenched" spring hangers. This was the intention from the beginning, but I had some things to measure before I could finish them.

For a certain Father-in-Law... Yes I still have it and yes it fits great.

A decent overall shot with the chopped windshield and new cowl rubber that came in the mail today. (yes the front frame rails will be shortened up eventually)

After mounting the driver seat I realized I was sitting too low to see through the windshield. Hopefully this does the trick. If you look back to some of my pictures you'll see what I'm talking about.
